Questions we hear most

What age can my child start?

Most children start between five and seven, once they can sit for a short lesson. Ask at the placement visit: piano and ukulele suit the youngest beginners, and trumpet and cello usually start a little later.

How long is a lesson?

Lessons are 30, 45 or 60 minutes. Beginners usually start with 30, and your teacher will suggest a length as you go.

Do we need our own instrument?

Ask your teacher before you buy or rent. Rental is by the term for most instruments, and a keyboard or a tuned guitar at home helps more than anything else.

How are teachers matched?

At the placement visit a teacher listens, we talk about what you want, and we match you by instrument, goals and schedule. If you would like a different teacher after a few lessons, tell us.

Can a parent sit in?

Yes. A parent may sit in on any lesson, and we ask the parents of the youngest students to stay for the first lessons.

What is a placement visit?

A short visit to the hall. A teacher listens to you play or sing, or to what you hope to play, we talk, and we match you with a teacher and a weekly time. You do not need to prepare anything.

Do students have to play in recitals?

No. The winter and spring recitals and the fall open mic are open to every student, and every student chooses. Some play in each one, and some never do.

What happens when a lesson is missed?

Cancel a day ahead and the lesson is made up with your teacher in the same term. A lesson the teacher cancels is made up too. Group classes are not made up.

Can an adult start?

Yes. Adults take private lessons in the evening and on Saturday morning, and some learn the same instrument as their child.

How does tuition work?

Tuition is set by the length and format of the lesson, and billed monthly or by the term. Instrument rental and a few other costs are extra. We give you the figures in writing at the placement visit.
